Melinoë’s Sister Blades, Hades II
Continuing our long standing partnership with our friends at Supergiant Games, the launch of Hades II included a set of replicas of the hero weapons wielded by the game’s main character Melinoë. We’ve previously created copies of props from Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and the original Hades for Supergiant. Some are displayed in their San Francisco offices and others have been gifted to fans over the years.
The sprite-scaled nature of the game meant a full digital re-sculpt was required to bring the designs to real world proportions. Supergiant requested two sets of blades for promotional purposes; each copy is a mix of epoxy and urethane castings, constructed over spring steel interior bracing for added durability. Art direction specified a 1:1 recreation of the game’s iconic coloring and shadow techniques, which required many passes and paint tests before the multitude of hues looked correct next to one another. There’s no pure black or white anywhere on these blades, and they really show off their subtle color shifts over a vibrant orange background (like Melinoë’s dress!) The final touches included custom-dyed orange leather wraps and transparent gem castings to contrast the flat painted finish.
We finished these nearly 18 months before the official game launch, so it’s great to finally be able to share them!
